「SD Lava」 is a versatile serif typeface family, with styles at either extreme for display purposes and styles in between for setting large amounts of text. The name has been changed from 「Sandoll Lava」, which was released in 2022, and the italic style has been added.

It has 6 weights and also has italic versions of all those weights that can be used for certain purposes. By using ‘Lt(Light)’ weight for long texts in 9-10 point sizes, and ‘Th(Thin)’, ‘Bd(Bold)’ and ‘Hv(Heavy)’ weights for titles or short texts in 24 point sizes and above, a variety of content can be handled with harmonious voices and stable readability. The refined details of 「SD Lava」 also aim to provide a comfortable reading experience in digital environments. Feel comfortable with ‘Lt’ and ‘Rg(Regular)’, and add points with ‘Tn’, ‘Bd’ and ‘Hv’. Information such as emphasis or titles can be clearly distinguished by using italics, even without changing the weight. 

When designing 「SD Lava」, we paid particular attention to the consistency of the white space in and around the letters. Letters are designed to keep the same impression when the weight is changed, and the spaces are fine-tuned based on the size most likely to be used. For this reason, Hangul glyphs have fixed widths in the ‘Lt’ weight, which is the basic weight as a text typeface, while these glyphs have a small range of different widths in other weights. 

「SD Lava」 was designed in collaboration with Typotheque, a type foundry based in The Hague. Sandoll designed Hangul and Typotheque designed Latin, Cyrillic and Greek glyphs, covering all European languages. All European languages can be written correctly with 「SD Lava」. Punctuation marks commonly used in Hangul have been designed and added separately. You can use them by selecting “Korean” in the “Language” menu of the “Character” panel in Adobe InDesign application. In addition, numerous options such as ligatures, small caps, figure styles (tabular/proportional, lining/old style), fraction, subscripts/superscripts can be applied in Adobe applications such as InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator.
