Family Born in the Cloud

In the morning, the first thing we check are our smartphones where we chat with friends, the subway signs on our way to work, the signs in our neighborhood shops, and the menus at our favorite restaurants. We encounter fonts naturally in our daily lives. However, most people don't realize this. Fonts are both familiar and unfamiliar to us. Today, let’s talk about how SandollCloud interprets the concept of fonts, which may seem unfamiliar to some.

Various fonts encountered in our daily lives

Font Characterization

SandollCloud, as a platform with a diverse range of fonts, is always contemplating ways to easily convey the concept of complex fonts. One of these methods is through the idea of "communication through characters." Rather than using rigid descriptions of lines of text, we believed that using characters could make the somewhat unfamiliar concept of fonts more approachable. Therefore, we developed characters that reflect the nature of fonts themselves, evoking the essence of fonts.

Before discussing characters, it's important to explain the concept of font families. Simply put, a font family is a collection of fonts based on one font but with various modifications.

While each font family may vary in composition, it typically includes variants such as Light for thin thickness, Regular for medium thickness, Bold for thick thickness, and Italic for slanted styles. Fonts within a family maintain a cohesive overarching concept while having distinct individual styles. Just like in real families, where each member shares similarities yet has unique traits, understanding this context makes it easier to grasp.

The 'SandollCloud Family' draws inspiration from the concept of calling a collection of fonts a font family. Additionally, the 'SandollCloud Family' reflects the formal characteristics of SandollCloud's BI (Brand Identity). Did you know that, for visual adjustment, the center circle of the cloud mark was drawn slightly larger? It's this feature that we've maximized and connected to characters. Three characters were born from one element, truly embodying the essence of a family, don't you think? Whenever I see the cloud mark now, I can't help but think of the 'SandollCloud Family,' gathered together like a group.

Details Seen When You Know Fonts

Introducing the SandollCloud Family! Among the various characteristics of fonts, we've personified the relatively easy-to-grasp concepts of serif, bold, and italic into the "SandollCloud Family."

Seri represents the characteristics of serif. Serifs are the protrusions at the beginning and end points of vertical or horizontal strokes in letters. Seri expresses these serif traits through its large feet and hat.

Boldy embodies the traits of bold font styles. As you can see, it's the largest character compared to others. Upon closer inspection, besides conveying the weight and scale typical of bold fonts, I also depicted the characteristic of having narrower internal spaces through the character's limbs. The arms and legs are depicted thick, making them appear short, which gives them an especially cute look.

Tali represents the characteristics of italic fonts. Italic is often used in modern times to emphasize meanings. Looking back in history, italic was used not only for emphasis but also to fit more words onto a page by utilizing its slanted feature. Interesting, right? Based on such stories, Tali is depicted in the smallest size with a tilted side profile. I also projected the italic's slanted characteristics onto the character's personality, capturing a quirky demeanor and attitude.

To elaborate further, as explained earlier, Seri also serves as a Regular font. Among font families, Regular is the basic form font that sets the standard. Therefore, Seri plays a role in establishing the benchmark for the "SandollCloud Family." Thanks to Seri, we can emphasize Boldy's volume and easily perceive Tali's tilt and small size.

The "SandollCloud Family" was created with the goal of making the somewhat unfamiliar stories of fonts more approachable.
