Curious About The Posters Made With 「GyeokdongMyeongjo」?
The New 『Gyeokdong』 Series, 「SD Gyeokdong MJ2」
The new extension font of Sandoll's undisputed bestseller 『Gyeokdong』 series. Following 「GyeokdongGothic2」 and 「GyeokdongGulim2」, 「SD Gyeokdong MJ2」 has been released. It took about 10 years to complete the 『Gyeokdong』 series as Sandoll has consistently expanded the 『Gyeokdong』 series due to continuous requests from users.
*Results from a 2021 survey showed a very high response rate for the extension of 「GyeokdongGulim」 and「GyeokdongMyeongjo」. 'Among existing fonts, the most desired weight expansion was...'/ 1st place 「GyeokdongGulim」 (31.7%), 3rd place 「GyeokdongMyeongjo」 (16%)
The concept that runs through the 『Gyeokdong』 series is the zeitgeist of the 1970s and 1980s. Even now, ‘retro’ and 'vintage' contents are still receiving a lot of love. In the trend, things from the past are not reproduced exactly as they were, but are transformed and improved to fit the current situation. 「Sandoll GyeokdongMyeongjo」 is also a font that interprets the transitional zeitgeist into a modern perspective.
In Korean typography, there is a style of font called SoonMyeongjo, which directly incorporates the characteristics of Chinese Ming typefaces. It has a structure that fits perfectly into a square, with large contrasts between horizontal and vertical strokes, triangular-shaped protrusions, and straight strokes extending. 「Sandoll GyeokdongMyeongjo」 is designed reflecting the characteristics of SoonMyeongjo. While sharing modules like 「GyeokdongGothic」 that fill the square frame, it also has features of Chinese calligraphy, where strokes are lifted when entering the square frame. The use of somewhat rigid descenders to express the characteristics of movable types is also impressive.
The newly released 「SD Gyeokdong MJ2」 expands the weight of the previously released 「Sandoll GyeokdongMyeongjo」 from one style to five styles. With the addition of regular and bold styles, it can emphasize a strong impression in titles. Here, 「SD Gyeokdong MJ2」 will be introduced in a slightly different way. Sandoll's font designer and brand designer revealed the charm of 「SD Gyeokdong MJ2」 and designed a poster accordingly.
Anytime, Anywhere, GyeokdongMyeongjo - Font Designer Jeong Tae-young
As the use of fonts becomes more extensive and diverse, there has been a need for fonts that can easily adjust to the nature of the medium and content. When one font cannot solve this, designers had to shed tears and work overtime to modify fonts or find suitable ones that fit. To address this, font families have evolved to be more diverse, allowing designers to choose appropriate weights, widths, and styles according to the situation.
「Sandoll GyeokdongMyeongjo」 is one of those fonts with a unique atmosphere that is hard to replace. However, there were times when the existing weights alone did not provide appropriate stroke thickness and contrast on surfaces with low resolution or in high-resolution displays. Considering these aspects, 「SD Gyeokdong MJ2」 derived from various weights, widths, and contrasts, has been developed to maintain its unique atmosphere even in more diverse environments. Designers can now express themselves more freely without spending their time searching for or modifying fonts that complement 「Sandoll GyeokdongMyeongjo」.

Since 「SD Gyeokdong MJ2」 comes in various weights, you can create fantastic posters using these diverse weights. To showcase this aspect, I incorporated 「SD Gyeokdong MJ2」 expressed in various weights as the main graphic. Additionally, I emphasized the details expressed in the shape of the letter outlines to make it more attractive. Furthermore, since 「SD Gyeokdong MJ2」 shares the same framework as the 「GyeokdongGothic」 and 「GyeokdongGulim」 fonts belonging to the 『Gyeokdong』 series, it makes a great harmony when used together. Therefore, for small texts aimed at conveying information, I used 「SD GyeokdongGothic2」, which offers better readability. With this wonderful font family and series that simultaneously address both graphics and typesetting concerns, it feels like a complete solution has been achieved.
Font That Suits Retro Design - Brand Designer Kim Yeoreum
As interest in retro design grows, we see various styles of retro designs emerging. I believe the 『Gyeokdong』 series enables such diverse attempts. The 『Gyeokdong』 series reinterprets past letters in a modern way, making them perfect for retro-themed designs. With various styles such as Gothic, Myeongjo, and Gulim, it can create different atmospheres even within retro design.
Especially, the recently released 「SD Gyeokdong MJ2」 follows the style of Myeongjo, which was widely used in the modern typography era. Myeongjo fonts are known for their readability, to the extent that they were used in the main text of modern newspapers, and their solid square structure makes them suitable for media where visibility is crucial, such as signboards. 「SD Gyeokdong MJ2」 maintains this style while being modernized, making it suitable for sophisticated yet retro mood works. Also, the slight differences in impression between weights allow designers to finely tailor their work to the desired atmosphere, which is also an attractive feature.
