Signs play a significant role in making a store stand out and be memorable, don't they? Especially in trendy areas with many popular shops, eye-catching signs are very important. Today, we took photos of signs in Seongsu and Yeonnam and analyzed their fonts and designs! Let's take a look at the characteristics based on industry and concept!

Overall Sign Trends

Before we look at the specifics by industry, let's take a look at the overall trends. We noticed a lot of signs with a retro feel. Many signs feature rounded frames made of acrylic or thick aluminum frames. Another characteristic is that the signs are often smaller compared to the width of the store. Some stores have multiple small signs or signs that are off to one side.

Restaurants & Bars

For restaurants offering international cuisines, there is a tendency to actively use the language of the respective country. For example, Chinese and Japanese restaurants often use Chinese characters and Kana. Therefore, we've examined the signs by Korean, Japanese, and Western cuisines.

In the case of Korean cuisine, especially BBQ restaurants, thick fonts or traditional brush-style fonts are commonly used to give a traditional impression. For these types of signs, we recommend fonts like 「ZW Worinseokbo」 and the free font 「YiSunShin」! Traditional characters are good, but if you want to capture the popular retro concept these days, you can also use fonts like 「Sandoll Dongbaik」. Similar fonts include Sandoll’s Gyeokdong series or Junfont's 「OldSign」 which have a similar feel.

The signs for Japanese and Western cuisines were also interesting! For more information on these, please check out the video.

Cafe&Dessert

Cafes often reflect their concept through their sign designs to maximize their theme. Therefore, we have categorized cafe signs into Retro, Natural, Modern, and Kitsch based on their concepts.

Retro-themed cafes often mix and match high-contrast colors. For a mix-and-match style, combinations like red, blue, and white can create an American retro feel, while orange and green can evoke a Japanese retro vibe. Fonts play a crucial role in enhancing this retro feel as well. Fonts like 「SD Cohhee」, 「JZukinie」, Brenner’s 「Reost」, and The Type Founders’ 「Brag」 can effectively enhance the retro atmosphere.
