Le Corbusier

Le Corbusier Oldface started as digital drawing of an antique, french-style set of metal templates owned by Marco Walser of Elektrosmog, who first used them for the graphic identity and signage of restaurant Rosso in Zürich. Initially drawn by Philippe Desarzens and first published in 2004, Lineto reassessed the existing drawings in 2022 and tasked Chiachi Chaowith redeveloping the font to current Lineto standards. His new drawing resulted in a finely detailed, faithful rendering of the original stencilled lettershapes, a very extensive character set, as well as new spacing and kerning. In 2023 he added a Cameo cut whose negative shapes mirror those of the actual stencil plates, offering room for a more playful use of these beautiful stencil fonts. Together with the Le Corbusier fonts, the family represents a meticulously drawn, contemporary take on classic lettering template styles from the early 20th century. Their design is often wrongly attributed to Le Corbusier, who famously used this particular style on many of his plans, drawings and books, relying on standard industrial stencils available from regular hardware stores. The new LL Le Corbusier fonts are available in four styles, Oldface, Oldface Cameo, Regular, and Condensed, first released in 2023.
